To say we were surprised more than a month ago when hearing from HTC on the company’s “official plans” for updating its “heroes” to Jelly Bean would be a huge understatement. At the time, pretty much no OEM had the guts to speak up about Android 4.1 upgrades, so to see HTC promising software leaps for three of its best phones was really something.
Unfortunately, HTC has mentioned nothing on the subject ever since, which is frustrating as heck, but not that surprising. One X, XL and S adopters are still craving for some Jelly Bean goodness on their devices, but by all means and purposes they’ll probably have to wait for a few more months to get some attention.
Official attention that is, because we have some excellent news for those of you who aren’t reluctant to flash custom ROMs on Android-based gadgets. The One XL, One S and EVO 4G LTE have just been added to the list of devices supported by CyanogenMod 10 nightly builds.
All three phones have had “experimental” Jelly Bean-based ports released for a few days, but the fresh new nightly builds are the first (partially) stable ROMs to hit them. We haven’t yet heard much feedback from users testing the ports, but, based on our earlier experiences with CM nightly builds, we expect them to run very smoothly, with only a limited number of bugs and glitches.
You can look for the CM10 ports for the three devices at get.cm, but if you have trouble locating any of the custom ROMs due to the length of the ever-growing list of nightly builds, here are the three specific links: the evita build for the One XL; the ville for the One S; the jewel for the EVO 4G LTE.
But wait, there’s more. You should be able to flash a JB-based port on the Tegra 3 version of the One X in a matter of hours too. A patch for the “international” One X has just been merged, so another official CM10 nightly build will be out soon.
As usual, please take all the precautionary methods possible to ensure you won’t end up regretting rooting your phones and voiding the manufacturer’s warranty. That means back up your data, only flash ports from trustworthy sources (like CM’s official website), and, if you have any queries, don’t hesitate to ask for help. Also, we would be very grateful if you’ll let us know how do the CM10 nightly builds work on your handhelds.
